N E W F O R M A L I S M | IDEA ONE: PAPER
This is a style inspired by both David Watson and Nicholas Alan Cope, photographers who have both created interesting images by using folded paper, and cleaver lighting. This gives a sort of geometric shape effect and is something that I felt is a very strong idea and creative use of simple objects.
The top image (R E D) is primarily a clean, and perfect look, representing happiness and light. The red paper adds warmth to the image, whilst the white background creates a clean and crisp look to the image. This shows the more artificial side of life, similar to the styles of Qui Yang, and Maurizio Cattelan & Pierpaolo Ferrari.
The bottom image (B L U E) is a bit more gritty, as you can see various other creases in the paper, and can also tell the image is of a piece of paper. The blue paper makes the image look cold and dull, creating a more depressing image, completely contrasting with R E D, with also the black background, contrasting against the white. This image shows the realism of life, similar to Caravaggio and Peter Claesz.
I feel both images go with each other well due to the contrasting yet similar styles. The use of colour and realism play a huge part in the piece of work as they help cancel each other out, creating the over all image.
